What Is It?

Flexitarian and Pescatarian diets are modern spins on vegetarianism that bend traditional rules to facilitate increased protein intake and allow for more flexibility (hench, “flex”).

  • Flexitarian (aka “semi-vegetarian”) — an eating philosophy that describes anyone who primarily eats vegetarian, but will occasionally have meat, poultry, or fish. By definition, this is NOT a vegetarian diet. Promotes heavy consumption of veggies, fruit, grains, tofu, beans, eggs, dairy, nuts, and seeds.
  • Pescatarian — follows all of the rules of vegetarianism (no meat or poultry), but includes fish.


What Isn’t Flexitarian or Pescatarian:
  • Flexitarian — technically everything goes, but severely limits consumption of meat, poultry, and fish.
  • Pescatarian — meat and poultry.
